Cat Yoga for Kids: Building Strong Hands, Steady Feet, and Mindful Movement

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, our young yogis stepped into a world of imagination, movement, and mindfulness inspired by the playful rhythm of “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?” Together, we explored a creative cat-themed yoga adventure that helped children develop body awareness, balance, strength, and focus while making plenty of wacky and wonderful sounds along the way.

Why Hands and Feet Alignment Matter in Kids Yoga

Strong yoga foundations begin with the hands and feet. When children learn to spread their fingers, press evenly through their palms, and ground through all four corners of their feet, they develop better balance, coordination, and body control. These foundational skills support yoga poses, sports performance, classroom focus, and everyday movement.

Throughout class, children transformed into playful cats, lions, dogs, butterflies, and horses while practicing yoga poses that encouraged them to notice how their bodies felt. Were their hands flat? Were their fingers spread wide? Were they firmly clawing the mat like a confident cat?

As children explored these questions through movement, they naturally strengthened their wrists, feet, ankles, and core while improving proprioception, the body’s ability to understand where it is in space.

Learning Through Imaginative Yoga Play

Research shows that imaginative movement helps children engage more deeply in physical activity while supporting cognitive development, emotional regulation, and creative thinking. By combining yoga with storytelling, animal sounds, and playful challenges, children remain actively engaged while learning important movement skills.

During our cat-themed adventure, students:

  • Practiced grounding through all four corners of the feet
  • Strengthened hand muscles by spreading fingers and pressing the pads, not tips, into the mat
  • Improved balance and stability through standing and weight-bearing poses
  • Developed focus and listening skills through movement games
  • Built confidence through creative self-expression

One favorite activity was “Stop Foot, Go,” a playful yoga movement game inspired by Musical Chairs. Children practiced quickly finding stability, identifying their right and left feet, and noticing how grounding through their feet helped them feel steady and balanced.

Clawing the Mat: A Simple Technique with Big Benefits

One of the most important lessons from our cat yoga adventure was learning to “claw the mat.”

Clawing the mat does not mean gripping tightly. Instead, children spread their fingers wide, activate the muscles in their hands, and gently press through their palms and fingers. This simple action creates stronger support for poses like Downward Dog, Plank, and Cat Pose.

When children learn to set their foundation effectively, they often experience:

  • Better balance
  • Increased body awareness
  • Greater stability
  • Improved posture
  • Enhanced coordination

These skills carry over far beyond yoga class and support healthy movement throughout childhood.

Mrs. Cat Can Meow. Imagine That!

A Poem of Wacky, Wonderful Noises While Clawing the Mat

By Kelley Sue Hardin

(Inspired by Dr. Seuss’ book “Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?”)

Oh, the wacky, wonderful sounds

Mrs. Cat can make!

She can sound like RAIN

Just Breathe

Dibble, dibble

Dibble, dop

Dibble, dibble

Dop, dop, dop

She can sound like a LION

In Pride Plank while clawing the mat

“ROAR!”

She can sound like a DOG

In Down Dog

Ruff! Ruff! Ruff!

She can whisper, whisper

In Dark Seed Light

Like the soft whisper of a BUTTERFLY

She can hover over her mat

And spread her wings

FLAP! FLAP! FLAP!

While lying on her belly

In Flat Like a Pancake

In Snake

With fingers spread wide

And her back puffed up

She can HISS!

She can CLAW!

She can stick her tail up in the air

And MEOW! MEOW!

In Cat

She can sound like a HORSE

KLOP! KLOP! KLOP!

In No Table Yes

Imagine that?!

She can sound like THUNDER

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

In Go To Your Room!

She can even slam the door

SMACK!

She can sound like a CLOCK

In Do The Twist

While moving her hands

Just like this…

Tick, Tock

Tick, Tock

Tick, Tock

She can SPLIT!

She can SPLOT!

She can sound like a BUG

In Baby Got Back

Oh, the wonderful sounds

Mrs. Cat can make.

All while clawing her mat.

Why don’t you try them out?

  • Inner Flexibility

BB40 big“How do you become flexible on the Inside?”

That is the question that I was asked by 4th grade student Isabelle at Yoga Club last week. We were working on acknowledging what we could use more of: strength, balance, or flexibility. After meditating to find what we had the least of, Isabelle raised her hand and asked this question. I stumbled for words, trying to be eloquent and honest on the spot. I spoke of the importance of strength and balance in finding inner flexibility… but honestly this answer felt like it came up short. I found myself reflecting on this question for the rest of the day (the class was over at 3:30pm). I consulted some dear friends and got many good suggestions such as taking a walk, for no other reason than to walk.

But here is what I came up with, that resonates as the voice of my own truth.

Being flexible on the inside is a lifelong process. There is a big difference between being loosey goosey with no boundaries, and being open to change and to testing new waters. These two polarities give us a framework for the spectrum of possibility. At the beginning, at the core, and at the point of willingness, is a strong inner truth. This truth is clear, it reminds me who I am, what is most important to me. For some this is a relationship with family or friends. For others their connection to their higher power is the most precious thing in their lives. Maybe for you it’s a sport, or a mission, or catfishing. I check in, sometimes daily, sometimes hourly, with my Truth. Each time I face a new challenge I ask myself “Does this bring me closer or farther away from _________________.”
