Be On Top of Your Mountain

Challenge yourself to make this pose more difficult, more meaningful. Make it matter.  Think of Mountain Pose as your family and the other poses as your friends, teachers, pets, and strangers.  Honor your family by being steady. Stay still and aware. This will build your power. This will build your LIFE FORCE. This will build strength in your family.

There are many ways to lose your power. Fidget, Mountain_1fiddle, move fast, leave your mat,, talk, turn one foot out, hyperextend your knee. You get disconnected and unplugged from your source of what matters.

You will realize, it really is not so easy to be still.

So what to do?  Practice thinking of Mountain as your Family.

We tend to be casual with our family. We might chew with our mouth open, sit slumped, or ignore what they are saying. We tend to pay more attention to our friends at the expense of those closest to us. It’s the same with our poses. Poses such as Crow and Triangle get much more attention. Friends and strangers get more attention. Family is hard.  Mountain is a hard pose. It sounds weird at first.  Just standing with dignity and steadfastness is hard?

Yes.

So, Honor your home. Honor your heart.

Don’t let yourself become lax or lazy…rather make an effort to find strength. It is there, deep within. Make this easy pose challenging so your challenging poses become easier. Be still and aware of your family so you can hold that space with the challenging people in your life. Tap into that strength at any time, and use it to achieve your heart’s desire.

And tap into it again and again, with each cycle of breath – Stay steady in Mountain. Hold onto your power. Honor the Highest.

Stand with your feet parallel. Root your feet into the earth and rise up inside with your breath. Mountain_2 Connect below and above-into the earth and up toward the sky-rooted and rising as a strong mountain on the horizon.  As you exhale, gently bring your palms to touch in front of your heart. Soften between your shoulder blades.  Inhale and draw energy from your feet to your basement.  Lengthen the sides of your body.  Exhale and bring your shoulders back.   Feel the solid ground within yourself- stable and present in this moment.  Be on top of your mountain, know your brightness, and shine your light out into the world.

  • Certified to Teach Kids Yoga in Middle School

Last night felt surreal.  I was standing in my kitchen with Lee, Amy & Cheryl when they handed me a single piece of cardstock with the words ‘Certified Grounded Teacher.’ I felt my throat clench and my heart skip a beat.  Though I have been teaching Grounded Yoga for over a year, it was this small piece of recognition that let me know that I am now officially recognized as part of one of the greatest movements of my lifetime.

Once I received my 200hr teacher training in 2012, I had begun leading my daughter’s classes at school once a week and eventually took over the Tween class at my studio.  I pulled resources from all around- other teachers, online sites, books, games…everything I could find to help create a well-rounded class.  It was a year of growth and some things worked and some failed miserably.  What I did know was that I loved teaching children- their honesty in their bodies and mouths and they way it was starting to create a shift in their perspective. My dear friend and teacher, Lee introduced me to Grounded in early 2013 when she came home lit UP from Level 1 training.  I watched her do Go To Your Room and that’s literally ALL it took!  I knew that something special was going on with Grounded…something that hadn’t been done before…something that was about to change how the world looks at kid’s yoga.  We put a plan together to “sell” our yoga program to our school as a full-time yoga curriculum.  And it WORKED!  I decided to take the Level 1 training just after school started so we could teach the same material and use each other to bounce ideas and begin to try to understand the huge undertaking we’d just landed.

Gratefully, I wake up every morning, breathing, heart beating and mind wide open. As I breathe into my heart I pray, “God, thank you for this day, thank you for this breath and thank you for this life.” I am passionate about living life through peace and love rather than through fear and hate. • Kale Me Crazy

    NutritionTWOsmall
Yesterday, I was with my friend Autumn, and she wanted to go to Taco Bell, which is her favorite restaurant. The only way my mom was willing to take us is if we went to a place called “Kale Me Crazy”. Basically, we were bribed. I’m not a huge kale person, so I never even though about going there.

A couple months ago, my mom had gone in there and gave the owner her recipe for almond milk. He turned it into a smoothie, naming it Grounded after my mom’s company. Of course, my mom ordered that one for us. It resembled the concoctions that my mom normally would make. It was a brown, grainy, mixture that literally looked like it came from the ground. I guess it lived up to its name.

Unenthusiastically, Autumn and I tried it. And we were surprised. It tasted like a healthy version of a chocolate milkshake. We couldn’t stop drinking it. Being the nice person that I am, I let Autumn have it so I could “enjoy” my kale smoothie, which was really disappointing compared to Grounded. I guess you never know what to expect.

To try this smoothie, I would recommend going to Kale Me Crazy or, you can even make the smoothie at home by blending these ingredients.

    Menu Grounded
    Recipe:

    Handful of raw almonds (soaked)
    3 tablespoons of raw cacao

    2 tablespoons of raw honey
    2 scoops of ice
    2 cups of water

  • A Poem of Wacky, Wonderful Noises While Clawing The Mat, CAT!

soundsIn celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday we learned how to work our feet and our hands.  Just as Suess’ Mr. Brown Can Moo!, Mrs. Cat can MEOW!   In “Mrs. Cat Can Meow! Can You?”  A Poem of Wacky, Wonderful Noises – While Clawing the Mat we allowed our inner animal out on the mat while paying close attention to our hands and feet. Are they wacky?  Are they flat?  Are they clawing the mat?  When practicing this wacky flow while making Suesserrific noises you too will learn the importance of clawing the mat.  In playing “Stop Foot, Go” (a zany spin on the all time favorite game, Musical Chairs) and studying the 4 corners of our feet we checked on our left foot and our right foot making sure they were fuzzy fur feet.  While “Roaring”, “split – splatting” and “meowing” along with Mrs. Cat we learned that when our four paws are aligned we feel more steady, more grounded, and in balance with the universe.
